The Appalachians and the Himalayas are the results of the collision of continents, faulting and folding, and weathering and erosion. While this exhibition focuses on the formation of the Appalachian Mountains approximately 250 million years ago, the parallel formation processes of the Himalayas, which began about fifty million years ago, provide comparative information on how large mountain chains are built and shaped. Central to the exhibition is a ten-minute film by Steve Dean, former producer of the Heartland Series. There will also be models, rock samples, video animations, and images to visually explain how and why the two chains formed and continue to change.
