Fifth Anniversary Celebration Remembering Roots Gala & Auction
The University of Tennessee was privileged to count Alex Haley among its great friends during the last years of his life. As an adjunct faculty member in the College of Communications, Haley was a valued and respected member of the UT academic community. In April 1991, he donated his notes, manuscripts, videotapes, and mementos to be housed in UT's Special Collections Library on the Knoxville Campus.
Haley touched the lives of many memebers of the UT community. In 2001 -- when the State of Tennessee challenged UT to raise $3,375,000 in private support over five years for African American Scholarships -- the Alex Haley Scholarships were created as the cornerstone of the fund-raising efforts.
Though the task was completed in the summer of 2006, the challenge to improve diversity within the university remains. The opportunities afforded by these scholarships at the University of Tennessee campuses in Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Martin are an important component of ensuring a diverse student enrichment and experience.
Gala & Auction tickets can be purchased for $100 per person and you must RSVP by May 9th, 2008. Dress for the event will be Black-Tie attire. Special guest, Lou Gossett Jr. will be attending.
