Welcome to town, Knoxville Thunderbolts!

The Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation (KTSC) would like to officially welcome the American Basketball Association (ABA) and its local team, the Knoxville Thunderbolts. The “new kids on the block” are quickly climbing the ranking ladder in their division, powering their way to #11 in the ABA Power Rankings.

The Thunderbolts’ first season began in November 2008 and games have been held at Grace Christian Academy. The team’s owners have plans in the works for construction of a large domed complex, the Thunderdome, which would function as a center for community sporting events as well as a home court for the ABA team.

Former University of Tennessee basketball players Damon Johnson and Dane Bradshaw are just two members of the team’s impressive roster.

A recent addition to the team’s schedule includes a game against the Beijing Olympians team, which holds some players who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The game will take place on February 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Grace Christian Academy.

“The Thunderbolts are a fantastic addition to Knoxville. Our city is the perfect host for any sporting league, and we are so excited that ABA has found a home here,” said Gloria Ray, president and CEO of the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation (KTSC).

“I think having the Thunderbolts in Knoxville is all about keeping the basketball dream alive for so many of these young men. We have a lot of local players who are pouring their heart and soul into the team, and since Knoxville has so many sports fans, this is a great town where the players can feel encouraged and celebrated,” said Chris Glisson, owner and general manager of the Knoxville Thunderbolts.
