Clever Kids Compete at Convention Center
WHAT: Three Day Battle of the Brains
WHO: 900 visiting students
WHERE: Knoxville Convention Center
WHEN: Sat. April 25th, Sun. April 26th & Mon. April 27th
Do you know what President made his living as a tailor in Tennessee before becoming Commander in Chief? You could get the answer from just about any of the 900 students who have come to the Knoxville Convention Center to compete at the national level in the Presidents tournament. Presidents is one of six academically challenging competitions during a three day brain battle organized annually by the Academic Games Leagues of America. Gifted students in grades 5 – 12 had to first qualify at the local level before being invited to Knoxville. This is the 44th annual Academic Games national competition, but this is the first time the tournament has come to Tennessee. Students will be going head to head with each other in Math, Language Arts, and History; all with the hopes of taking home the top prize-a gold statue in the likeness of August Rodin’s sculpture-The Thinker.
What is Academic Games?
Academic Games Leagues of America encourages academic excellence through organized competition. It offers students who excel academically a chance to compete and be recognized for their talents, much in the same way a sporting event does for an athlete. Each year there are six academic games in which the students may compete at the national level. Three are board games- On-Sets and Equations, which are Math, and Linguishtik, which is English. The other three academic games- Presidents, World Events, and Propaganda - are played with a moderator who asks questions. Academic Games Leagues of America is a nonprofit organization with participating leagues and school districts around the county. Local competitions determine who gets to compete at the national level.
