Knoxville loves antique cars!

A springtime favorite is back in Knoxville this year for the 26th consecutive year. The National Street Rod Association (NSRA) will bring its 35th annual Street Rod Nationals South to town, set to take place May 1-3, with all activities at Chilhowee Park.

Approximately 3,000 pre-1949 street rods will bring more than 11,000 participants from all over the United States to Knoxville to attend this super automotive extravaganza. A street rod is an automobile manufactured prior to 1949 that has undergone a great deal of modernization and refinement.

“The Street Rod Nationals South is the largest automotive event in the region. The combination car show, trade show and crafts fair will not only feature 3,000 beautifully painted and chromed street rods to view, but the event also includes commercial exhibits, a vintage swap meet, kids activities, live entertainment, a Sunday Worship Service, games and food,” said Jerry Kennedy, event director for the NSRA.

Additionally, the NSRA “Super Prize” program will return this year. In 2008, more than $84,000 in giveaway prizes was presented to participants throughout the weekend.

All activities during the event are open to the public. Event hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $14 per adult, $5 per child (6-12 years) and children 5 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Special discount prices will be available for senior citizens, military personnel and NSRA members upon proper identification.

Tourism officials with the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation (KTSC) project that the 2009 NSRA Street Rod Nationals South will bring more than $12 million of economic impact to the Knoxville/Knox County area.
