Convention to "Shake Things Up" in Knoxville

There’ll be a whole lot of shakin’ going on in Knoxville soon.

The Novelty Salt & Pepper Shakers Club will hold its national convention at the Knoxville Crowne Plaza hotel July 16-18. The convention will bring together shaker enthusiasts from across the U.S., Canada, Europe and beyond. The collectors will celebrate and educate about the many unusual, rare and pricey sets of salt and pepper shakers members have collected over the years.

The attendees travel to the convention to buy and sell novelty salt and pepper shaker sets, display their prized shakers in contests and exhibits, dress up as their favorite pair of novelty shakers and attend auctions and socialize with other devotees of their unique hobby.

Events scheduled during the convention include display and theme contests where participants submit a set of shakers that best depicts the convention’s theme “Shake Down in K-Town.” Another fun and unique event is the costume contest. Members dress up as their favorite shakers to compete in single, double and multiple shaker look-alike events. The contest includes specific age categories for grown-ups, children and toddlers.

Therese Francin, convention chairman and president of the Southeastern Chapter of the Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers Club, said that almost anything is possible during these contests, and she looks forward to seeing what members come up with to represent the convention theme, the various shaker displays and the costume contest.

Convention attendees include folks from the more than 500 national members of the club who will converge in Knoxville. Many will travel long distances to participate, some from as far away as England, Australia and New Zealand.

The purpose of the Novelty Salt & Pepper Shakers Club is to provide services and education to those interested in the history and collection of novelty and figural salt & pepper shakers.
