Getting defensive in Knoxville
Snapping a board in half or breaking a pile of cement blocks with one foot is always amusing to a curious audience, but martial arts requires both physical and mental ability in order to perform.
The Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame (IHOF) tournament will celebrate its 30th anniversary July 31-August 1 at the Knoxville Convention Center. The tournament is an international event, held annually to honor and recognize outstanding Isshin-Ryu practitioners from around the globe for their contributions to the art of Isshin-Ryu Karate.
Isshin-Ryu is a style of karate developed in Okinawa, Japan and has become a popular form of defense that is a combination of martial arts styles and weapons that teaches traditional defense methods.
Approximately 300 competitors from all over the United States will attend the event, plus some from Canada, Nepal and other countries.
The attendees will compete in several divisions and contenders will be awarded for their performances. Additionally, competitors will attend seminars about Isshin-Ryu Karate.
The tournament is open to all Isshin-Ryu Karate-Ka. Final registration fee is $75. General admittance to the public is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and free for children under the age of five.
