It’s hip to be square

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Get ready to “promenade and swing your partner ‘round and ‘round” this weekend when the Tennessee State Square and Round Dance Clubs, Inc. (TSASRDC) holds its annual state convention August 15-18 in the Knoxville Convention Center.
Square dancing clubs from all over the state of Tennessee as well as Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Indiana will participate in this year’s convention. Previous conventions have been held in Chattanooga, Memphis, Johnson City, Gatlinburg, Nashville and Pigeon Forge.
The group hopes the return to Knoxville will allow its participants to renew old friendships, make new friends and dance with other participants from across the state and from neighboring states. The public is invited to come out and welcome the convention attendees to town.
You may have seen square dancers displaying their skills at the Tennessee Valley Fair, Fountain City Park, Knoxville Center, parking lots and just about any place that has enough dancing space, but do you know what a round dancer is? Come out and see for yourself! You may be surprised to find that round dancers do movements very similar to ballroom dancers.
Event participants are not only getting down with square dancing – there will also be round and line dancing, as well. To enjoy the event, visitors may check-in at the registration table and view the convention activities free of charge.
The TSASRDC aims to promote square and round dancing by coordinating activities among clubs throughout Tennessee, improving the social image through publicity, and acting as a liaison between Tennessee dancers and the national organization.
