Knoxville, Tennessee (November 16, 2012) - The Greater Knoxville area hotel housekeepers will be competing in the Greater Knoxville Hospitality Association (GKHA) Housekeeping Championship event on Monday, November 19, 2012, 3:00 p.m., at the Knoxville Convention Center Ballroom.
The event allows the lodging industry an opportunity to recognize its hardworking housekeeping employees and gives the housekeepers a chance to let loose and have some friendly and crazy competition.
Making a third appearance as a team game is “Bell Cart Wheelie.” “Hotel staffs use bell carts everyday,” says Jill Thompson, Executive Director of GKHA. “We’ll be giving them quite a different use during the games.”
Eight (8) highly unusual games make up the championship by incorporating many items housekeepers use daily. “Luggin’ Laundry” is an example of one relay where contestants must fold towels from laundry cart after pushing it through an obstacle course.
"The Invasion of the Commode Snatchers" is equivalent to basketball; however, a commode seat is the "hoop" and a roll of toilet paper is the "ball". The game "Alley Oop" would be compared to bowling; the "pins" are spray bottles and softballs are used to roll the coveted strike. Another skilled game is "Journey to the Center of the Dust" where buffer pads are tossed at an upright broom handle.
It's a race against the clock in "Dressed for Success". Teams undress and redress a dummy in uniform attire complete with tool belts. "Curtain Call" is another competitive game where each team member will put up a shower curtain and scramble to set up an amenity tray in record time. Making a bed then tearing it apart in the fastest time is the objective in "The Big Bed Makeoff."
Each participating hotel/motel has a team consisting of four (4) members and the executive housekeeper. As team leader, the executive housekeeper has the task of keeping the team motivated and moving through the paces.
A trophy will be presented to the team with the most points and a Team Spirit Award goes to the most spirited team in the competition. Hilton Garden Inn, will be there looking for their fourth win. “We practice daily,” says General Manager Fred Bullard. “We’re very competitive.”
Overall sponsor, Cintas, will have company representatives present to serve as scorekeepers along with other game sponsors: Ecolab, Sysco Guest Supply, Print Distribution, Kelsan, Visit Knoxville, HD Supply, Sam’s Club, Above the Rest Events, JeneRation Recycling.
Students from Hospitality/Lodging programs at the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Community College will be game umpires.
Greater Knoxville Hospitality Association is a not for profit membership organization of the hospitality industry that enhances the economic, legislative and social interests of its members throughout the Greater Knoxville area.
