The nation’s brightest students and faculty members visit Knoxville
Put your thinking cap on and head out to the Knoxville Convention Center on October 29 to join the most elite college students from across the country at the 2007 Oak Ridge National Laboratory Department of Energy (DOE) Day of Science.
More than 1,000 students and faculty from the sciences and other disciplines are expected to attend this year’s “Science Accelerated”- themed DOE event. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain information and make contacts with the DOE, as well as increase internship and career options by hands-on learning from the national laboratories and other facilities.
This year’s Day of Science features student opportunities such as summer and semester internships, co-op opportunities, a graduate school fair and post-doctoral programs. There will also be a job fair offering interviews for current DOE position openings, faculty opportunities presenting technical assistance workshops, DOE user facilities and collaboration prospects.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory was established in 1943 to achieve a single mission with the World War II Manhattan Project. Since then, it has advanced into a one-of-a-kind resource used to concentrate on significant national and global energy and environmental issues. This multi-program of science and technology is managed for the U.S. Department of Energy. Here, scientists and engineers conduct research and development to generate scientific knowledge and technological explanations. This information is used to strengthen the nation’s leadership in science, increase the availability of clean, abundant energy, restore and protect the environment and contribute to national security.
Officials with the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation project that the Department of Energy Day of Science will bring approximately $722,200 to the Knoxville/Knox County area.
