Scientific organization takes liking to Knoxville
Knoxville, get ready to put on your scientific thinking cap because the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) is coming to town! IEEE signed a deal with the Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation (KTSC) to bring a Nuclear Science Symposium (NSS) and Medical Imaging Conference (MIC) to Knoxville in 2010.
The conference, named "IEEE 2010 NSS MIC," will take place Oct. 31 through Nov. 6 at the Knoxville Convention Center, and is expected to bring approximately 1,700 event attendees to Knoxville. IEEE has signed contracts with the KTSC and six downtown hotels - Knoxville Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Hilton Knoxville, Hampton Inn & Suites, Holiday Inn Select and Four Points by Sheraton.
"This is a great opportunity for Knoxville to have a scientific group of this nature in our ‘Innovation Valley' and it has been greatly supported from local scientists in Oak Ridge. This group could lead to many other opportunities of this nature for Knoxville," said Kim Paul, KTSC senior vice president of sales and marketing.
IEEE is a non-profit organization that serves as the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. It is the leading authority on areas such as aerospace systems, computers, telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power, consumer electronics and much more. Global members rely on IEEE as a source of technical and professional information, resources and services. IEEE has more than 375,000 members including approximately 80,000 students in more than 160 countries.
KTSC tourism officials project that the IEEE 2010 NSS MIC conference will generate approximately $3,683,220 of economic impact for the Knoxville/Knox County community.
