Knoxville gearing up to be street rod heaven
Be prepared to hear the roar of engines when the 34th Annual National Street Rod Association (NSRA) Street Rod Nationals South comes to Knoxville May 2-4 at Chilhowee Park & Exposition Center.
The Street Rod Nationals South event unites a car show with more than 125 commercial exhibits, a vintage car swap meet, arts and crafts, food, games and live entertainment for the whole family. All of this excitement is centered around the event attendees’ love of street rods, which are defined as modernized vintage-automobiles that must have been manufactured prior to 1949.
More than 20,000 street rod enthusiasts will bring more than 3,000 street rods to Knoxville during the three-day event. The cars in attendance are valued between $8,000 and $100,000 each with an average of $28,000 per vehicle, creating a combined worth of $100 million.
“Every year, we can’t wait until spring when thousands of brightly colored street rods come to decorate Knoxville for a few days. We are pleased that the National Street Rod Association has come back to town year after year to share their passion with our city,” said Gloria Ray, President & CEO of KTSC.
The Street Rod Nationals South “Super Prize” giveaways will include more than $100,000 in merchandise and a special NSRA “Sunday $weep$take$” will give three lucky participants $3,000 each during the official awards program.
All activities during the event are open to the public. Event hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $14 per adult, $5 per child (6-12 years) and children 5 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Special discount prices will be available for senior citizens, military personnel and NSRA members upon proper identification.
With more than 53,000 members worldwide, the NSRA Street Rod Nationals South is the largest street rod sanctioning organization in the world. The Volunteer Street Rod Association of Knoxville will lend a hand with the event representing Knoxville as the official host club for the 25th consecutive year.
Tourism officials with the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation (KTSC) project that the NSRA Street Rod Nationals South will have a local economic impact of $21.6million.
