Knoxville celebrating National Tourism Week in a big way

Every year, America dedicates an entire week to tourism - and in 2008, Knoxville's kicking it off in a big way. During "Gotta Know Knoxville" Day on Saturday, May 10, Knoxvillians will have the opportunity throughout the day to visit many of the city's attractions free of charge.

There are more than 30 attractions participating in "Gotta Know Knoxville," Day, including Blount Mansion, James White's Fort, Knoxville Museum of Art and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, among others. Other offerings include a complimentary sightseeing cruise from 2:30 to 4 p.m. aboard the Star of Knoxville Riverboat and one free round of golf at Zuma Fun Center. Several attractions that always have free admission will also be included in the event.

The week of May 10-18 celebrates National Tourism Week, and the inaugural "Gotta Know Knoxville" Day is based on the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation's (KTSC) campaign aimed at educating local tourism partners on what Knoxville has to offer its visitors. This campaign, called "Gotta Know Knoxville" has been in effect since October 2007.

KTSC's "Gotta Know Knoxville" program is open to hotel, restaurant, local attraction employees and anyone interested in learning how to spend an afternoon in Knoxville. Participants spend approximately four hours learning about attractions, venues and retail outlets in the Knoxville area.  Attendees spend one hour watching a presentation, one hour participating in a walking tour, and another two hours partaking in a driving tour.

To date, the "Gotta Know Knoxville" program has graduated 126 Knoxville ambassadors within eight classes.

The schedule for "Gotta Know Knoxville" Day is available online at www.Knoxville.org.  Hours for each attraction are also listed. The public is invited to visit the attraction free of charge during the designated hours on the schedule for May 10.
